SSID (Service Set Identifier) alludes to the name of your wireless connection, that you see on the "Accessible Wireless Connections" list from your PC or your laptop while connecting.

Once you’ve disabled the SSID broadcast, the primary time when someone wants to attach to your wireless network, you would like to supply the name to them. Click on Wireless -> Basic wireless settings -> Click on the Disable radio-button next to “Wireless SSID Broadcast”

5-network encryption:

Let us start with the fundamentals . This is a crucial task. There are a mess of encryptions out there. within the newest routers, WPA2 is that the most secure one, and WEP the smallest amount secure. Choose your encryption accordingly.

Most of the wireless router has the encryption disabled by default. confirm to enable either WPA or WPA2 wireless encryption. Click on Wireless -> Wireless Security , to enable the encryption and assign a password as shown in Fig-1. Following are the various wireless encryption options available.

  • WPA2: this is often the newest wireless encryption standard that gives the simplest encryption. Always use WPA2, if both your wireless router and laptop wireless adapter supports it.
  • WPA (Wi-Fi Protected Access): WPA-PSK is additionally refered as WPA-Personal. this is often a replacement version of wireless encryption standard and safer than WEP. Most of the wireless adapters on your laptop will support WPA.
  • WEP (Wired Equivalent Protection) 64-bit and 128-bit: WEP is an old wireless encryption standard. Never use WEP encryption, which may be hacked within seconds.

6-Filtering PC Mac addresses

Even after you've got performed the above item#1 – #4, a really determined hacker should get access to your network. subsequent security step is to permit wireless access only to your trusted laptops, by allowing wireless connection only to known MAC address.

A Mac addresses is an inbuilt address in your device's networking equipment. it's almost like an IP addresses, except that it cannot be changed. For more protection, you'll add Mac addresses of all of your devices to your wifi network.

MAC (Media Access Control) address is an unique identifier attached to most network adapters. during this case, this could be the unique identifier of your laptop wireless adapter. On Linux, do ifconfig from the prompt to urge wireless hardware address. On windows, do ipconfig /all from the prompt to spot the MAC address as shown below:

C:>ipconfig /all
Ethernet adapter Wireless Network Connection:
Connection-specific DNS Suffix  . : socal.rr.com
Description . . . . . . . . . . . : Dell Wireless 1390 WLAN Mini-Card
Physical Address. . . . . . . . . : 00:1A:92:2B:70:B6

Click on Wireless -> Wireless MAC filter -> Click on Enable radio-button next to “Wireless MAC filter” -> Click on “Permit only PCs listed to access the wireless network” radio-button.

In other words, find your devices' Mac addresses. In PC, use prompt and sort "ipconfig /all". you'll see your Mac address against the name 'Physical Address'. In your phone, you will find your Mac address under networking settings. Simply add these Mac addresses to your wifi router's administrative settings. Now only these devices are going to be ready to access your wifi.

7- Reducing your Wifi's Range

The easiest way to do this is to put the router under the bed in a shoe box, or to wrap foil around its antennas. Similarly, you'll also change your wifi router's mode to 802.11g rather than the other mode.
